Hi everyone! I’m actually doing a thing here. I am writing my very first blog can you believe it! As a result, I thought I’d share a pattern of mine that would be a great Valentine’s/Galentine’s gift. While we should take each day to show how much our loved ones mean to us, there are official and unofficial days added to the calendar to celebrate friendship. Learn how to make this adorable crochet heart beanie keychain, free crochet pattern by just in time for Galentine’s and Valentine’s day!

A few years ago I heard about an amazing cause called Hat Not Hate, an anti-bullying campaign that was launched by Lion Brand Yarn Company. In this act of craftivism makers have come together by making blue hats to be distributed to schools to remind students that it’s cool to be kind. I created my Kind Heart Beanie keychain as a keepsake to share with a reminder for us to be kinder to one another. It is mini beanie made using waistcoat or knit stitch and a beautiful heart design is in the center. These are so awesome to give to a friend, classmates, students and teachers. They can be adorned on backpacks or your keys. I’ve seen some hang them on their visors. With February 14th approaching it always makes a nice gift for a friend or loved one.

I was inspired to make this keychain by Ashley of A Crafty Concept. She designed a beautiful Tunisian crochet heart beanie that I made as one of my donations. I loved it so much that I wanted to make a small heart-shaped reminder for us to be kinder to one another. That is how the Kind Heart crochet beanie keychain came to be! This pattern is quick, easy & the perfect stash buster! You can wear it on your keys, backpack or hook it onto your wip bag.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

CROCHET BEANIE KEYCHAIN MATERIALS

20-30 yards of any worsted weight yarn that are comparable to Lion Brand Yarn Jeans or Ombre (2 colors, one for the main color, the other for the heart)

STITCH KEY (US TERMS)

mc – main color

cc – contrasting color

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

rs – right side

wc – waistcoat stitch

sl st – slip stitch

blo – back loop only

fo – fasten off

rep – repeat

Notes: This pattern is using waistcoat stitch or knit stitch. I love using this technique because its stitches closely mimic knit. It is worked in the round from the brim up. You will be working in a spiral in continuous rounds so you will not ch 1 or sl st at the end of each round. You will work through the post of each & every single crochet (sc) around to build your beanie to the desired keychain height. When changing color from mc to cc colors, it is best to use the carry your colors method so that you avoid cutting & having many tails to weave in later on. Here’s a tutorial by Rich Textures Crochet that I found helpful if this technique is new to you: How to Crochet Knit/Waistcoat Stitch in a Round.
